Dining Editor (Freelance)
  • Freelance in Shanghai | Office
  • Salary: Unknown
  • Candidate Location: Only applicants currently in Shanghai

Job Description

Shanghai’s leading, most terrific, and wonderful city guide web-zine SmartShanghai.com is looking for someone to join our editorial team of freelancers, assuming creative and administrative responsibilities relating to the food & beverage content on our website.

We’re looking for a freelance Dining Editor-slash-Database Administrator. Basically, the job opening is a two-fold position wherein the ideal candidate would be creating and executing dining editorial content on the website, but also performing various administrative duties like data entry, general copy-writing and editing, and directory maintenance.

The role involves conceiving and executing, writing and editing dining content — the latest industry news, features, reviews, columns, anything and everything — as well as staying on top of the F&B industry in Shanghai and representing us and our company out in the community.

And then, yes, all that aforementioned administrative stuff.

We offer:

  • A freelance salary level that’s above market level averages, as well as expenses and fabulously random perks.
  • The freedom to develop your writing and portfolio relating to the most important endeavor of human existence: eating food and then talking about it.

Requirements

We're looking for:

  • A well-connected native English speaker with a strong, unique voice.
  • Someone passionate and knowledgeable about food and drink in Shanghai and capable of communicating that passion and knowledge in interesting ways to our readers.
  • An outgoing personality. Someone willing to connect with Shanghai's ever-evolving F&B scene, maintain relationships with its key players and creators, stay on top of the latest developments, and represent our company in this city's restaurants and bars. (You better enjoy tapas, tapas, and more tapas, is what we're sayin'.)
  • A foundation knowledge and understanding of food and beverage, including but not limited to Chinese and international cuisines. Previous experience in professional food writing is a big plus.
  • We prefer candidates who have spent some time in Shanghai — a few years at least — and can demonstrate a certain level of familiarity with the city.
  • Chinese language skills are a big plus.
  • Photography skills are a big bonus as well.

You should be able to commit 8-10 hours per week (working remotely) and be able to join one editorial meeting per week in our office.
