Big opportunity to sample some world-class cuisine from an interesting and creative Thai chef down at URBAN Café. If you're searching for new flavors and a little ingenuity in the space between your knife and fork in the near future, get yourself sorted for reservations because it's this weekend only.

Chef Rosarin is the head chef of Michelin-guide restaurant Celadon at Sukhothai's flagship hotel in Bangkok is here at the Sukhothai Shanghai.Michelin devotees will recognize Celadon as one of the most celebrated Thai restaurants in Bangkok. Kind of a treat to have her in town cooking us up something special.

Sukhothai's outdoor terrace opened quietly last year. It's nice addition to the downtown alfresco dining options.

Chef Rosarin is no stranger to Shanghai and has whipped up well-received menus for URBAN Café back in 2018 and again in 2021. We tried Chef Rosarin's food in 2021 and we were really blown away. Rosarin's take on Thai food is modern and creative, with punchy flavors that you'll remember.

There she is,Chef Rosarin. If you see her, say hello!

So, for this weekend only, they have two tasting menus featuring a "best of" tour Celadon in the four-course lunch and the six-course dinner set menus prepared by Chef Rosarin herself. Great chance to see what everyone's talking about without purchasing a plane ticket.

THE FOOD:

Seared scallops with loquats

We got to try out their six-course tasting menu, starting off with seared scallops paired with loquats. Some of us cannot count the nights that we've downed loquat syrup to soothe throats after a night of karaoke, but trust me, this doesn't taste like throat cordial at all. The loquats lend a sweet floral note that contrasts with spicy northern Thai spices. (Warning: This is Bangkok spicy, not Shanghai-thai-food-spicy).

Grilled pork skewers... tender and sweet. Guests at our table took note that the dish looked like something out of Minecraft. Huh!

The spiny eel fish soup instantly puts you at a beachside resort on a Thai island -- the lemongrass accents. You might think, eel isn't a typical Thai ingredient, but Chef Rosarin told us that she serves Northern Thai fare, where this is a staple. Needless to say, Northern Thai food is its own breed and is less common overseas (and what a travesty this is).

Grilled river prawn, shallots, lime, enoki mushrooms with banana

I was a bit full at this point (went a little heavy on the cocktails, didn't I?), but the main dish is worth sacrificing a cocktail to make room for: a de-shelled grilled river prawn seasoned for a mouthful of delicate umami. We heard a nearby table praising the stewed vegetables that were served with the main: enoki mushrooms with stewed slices of bananas underneath.

Sweet sticky rice with a durian "flower" in fresh coconut milk

If you don't like durian, all hope is not lost. One of the desserts has just a slight tinge of durian coupled with sweet sticky rice, a twist on the typical mango sticky rice that you get elsewhere.

The lounge is serving 10 unique cocktails named after famous cities. Order a few and make your night fly -- why not. I had the Tokyo-inspired cocktail and definitely saw Sakuras when I was climbing into bed later that night. Not bad at all.
